Smith Lake Trail Loop

Why I Love It
Smith Lake Trail is one of those hikes that delivers a little bit of everything without overcomplicating it. The first half mile comes in strong—it’s the toughest part—but the payoff is immediate with big views as you climb. From there, the trail settles into a steady rhythm through the forest, with a great little waterfall crossing that feels especially good on a hot summer day. And then you reach the lake. Smith Lake is calm, clear, and tucked into a quiet alpine basin that makes you want to stay awhile. Whether you’re fishing, looping the shoreline, or just sitting still, it has that peaceful, earned-it kind of feel. And a quick note from experience—this is the only trail I’ve had a bear encounter on, so come prepared and stay aware.
